Getting a tattoo is a big, badass but permanent deal. There’s a lot to consider and mull over beforehand. That’s where I come in! Here are some tips to save you from that, ‘Oh god. What did I get inked on my body forever?’ moment.
Top 7 Tattoo Tips for Chicks
Have you passed by someone on the street and drooled over their ink ? Stop them and ask about it! My best work was inspired by a tattoo style I just happened to see and love. Most proud tattooed people will be ready to hand over their artist’s details.
Once you find an artist or shop that you like, check out every online review or photograph that you can find. Talk to their current and past customers, if you have a chance. You want to get inked at a tattoo parlor that has both history and an awesome reputation. Shy away from those fly by night places that offer $35 tattoos on Wednesdays. Okay? Okay. I made that mistake once. And I ended up having to get that tattoo covered up. So, please don’t let it happen to you!
Know What You Want
Before you walk through the doors of a shop, ask yourself some important questions (more than once). How big do you want it? Where do you want it? What colors do you want? You may already have a crystal clear vision in your head of the perfect tattoo but you may also need to be somewhat flexible. Sometimes that vision needs a bit of tweaking and reworking to translate to the tattoo medium. Try going in with an open mind.
Most tattoo shops that are even worth your time will not offer any tattoo (no matter how small) for under $50. This is a ‘Shop Minimum.’ Getting a tattoo is like anything else – you get what you pay for. Once your artist draws up your tattoo, (s)he will tell you the price and note it on your paperwork before he starts.
Speak The Hell Up
The artist will draw up (or copy, if you picked flash from the shop wall) your tattoo and show it to you on paper before (s)he places the stencil on you. If you don’t like the way something looks, whether it’s lettering, size, or even the placement of the stencil on your body, be honest and voice your opinion. It’s your skin. You will have this tattoo for the rest of the life. So, make sure you get what you want and nothing less.
Relax & Listen
It’s time to get inked. The worst thing you can do is not listen to your tattoo artist. Relax and let the man/woman do his/her job. You’ll want to be as relaxed as possible when that needle hits your skin. Don’t forget to breathe. It will make your experience so much better!
Keep It Clean
Your tattoo artist will give you directions on exactly what to do (and not to do) to keep your ink in good shape while it heals. Follow those directions! You don’t want ruin the beautiful ink you just paid a ton of money for.
I hope these tips helped make your tattoo experience a bit easier!
