I consider myself a pretty ‘giving’ person, but I have to admit that at the beginning of every relationship, I had the most trouble with finding the right present for the first gift holiday. You don’t want to come off as We’ll be together forever but you don’t want to be a heartless bitch who doesn’t give a gift, either. So how do you find the balance? Here are 4 gift ideas for a new boyfriend—take them, leave them, or add them to the maybe pile.
So let’s assume you’re a few months in. If you’ve taken the dive and made it official, it’s safe to say you have some idea of what his interests and hobbies are. A book is always a safe gift, so long as it’s related to what he’s into. Next time he leaves the room to use the bathroom or take a phone call, take a look at his bookcase. If you don’t see books and instead, your new honey is all about video games or movies, these count too.
I’m assuming that your new lover has something he’s interested in. Anything that answers to that interest is always a safe bet when it comes to finding a gift idea for a new boyfriend.
Something You Can Do Together
If you’re not sure what to get him, consider doing something you can do together. A laid back weekend trip with a group of friends (or just the two of you, if you’re comfortable taking it there), a concert, a movie festival, paint-balling, hiking—any activity you two can enjoy is a great gift idea.
Research has been done (and I’ll cite it later) that says we are happier with money spent on activities than we are on material things. Consider it a gift, or rather, an opportunity, for you to get closer.
Something He Can Do Alone
“Wait. We’ve only been together for a few months and I’m already giving him space?” Yup. Exactly.
There’s this crrazzzzy idea that women are clingy and crazy and want to live and breathe their lover’s every move. WELL! Here’s your chance to show you’re not only a badass, but that you’re worth keeping around.
So when you’re looking for some gift ideas for a new boyfriend, consider giving him the opportunity to go on a solo adventure or have some quality bro time. Let’s say he’s into paint-balling, for example. Get him a gift certificate that holds more than a couple of tickets worth. A video game (if he’s into it) would also fall into this category.
Not only will this make him happy, but it’ll also show you respect his solo time.
Something You Can Do for Him
Let your imagination fly. This doesn’t have to be a sexy Santa dance, either. Yes, you can do something sexy and fun for him but you can also offer your other, not so sexy, services to help him too.
This is the most creative of the bunch and gives you the most room to show how caring and thoughtful of a girlfriend you can be. House sit his dog when he goes for a day trip with his family. Offer to get his car cleaned while he relaxes and watches football with friends. You can decide how intense (or how light) you want this to be.
And remember that sometimes, all it takes is planning a nice night out for the both of you to really make him smile.
And If All Else Fails
Walk to Best Buy and don’t leave until you have a DVD set, a cool gadget, or an awesome nerdy gift in hand. Or there’s always paper mache—that’s always fun.
