Juice Fast: Day 2 (Sticking at Rock Bottom)

juice fast

It’s day 3 of the juice fast, but I won’t tell you about day 3 yet.. I have to tell you about yesterday.

I woke up with a headache that seemed to echo throughout my entire skull. When I opened my eyes, I couldn’t believe I had made it out of day 1 alive. The idea that I lived through it without reaching for medicine seemed abstract; a concept I couldn’t grasp.. no matter how hard I tried.

7:00 am – Pleasant surprise: I could hold water down. I drank a full glass and made a carrot juice.

I stayed up until 9 or so, made an oranje juice and went to take a nap to try and rid myself of the headache.

12pm – Apple, spinach, celery and cucumber juice.

2:00 pm  – laid back down and slept until about 4.

I don’t know why, but I couldn’t get rid of the headache. It was completely different than the one from day 1… But when 5:30 hit and I had to cook dinner for baby Luca… the headache and the nausea amplified. I didn’t want the food, I just wanted the pain to go away. I was in bed with Luca by 7pm, with a cold rag on my forehead and hope for a better tomorrow.

The entire day, I fought the need to run to the medicine cabinet. I kept telling myself my body knew how to heal and that I was only depriving it of toxins and flooding it with nutrients. It was as if there was a complete disconnect with the way my mind and body were working. Having to absorb the pain was the scariest thing I have done since Luca was born.

Taking 6-8 pain killers a day is not something I want in my life.

What got me through these 2 days of rock bottom? Listening to my baby playing upstairs and imagining being healthy enough to play with him. Watching the video of him playing in the snow with Jason and his parents.. while I laid in bed, knowing that if I didn’t fight… that if I didn’t hold on.. I would miss so many more of those days.

In the past 2 days, I have gone without coffee, medicine and cigarettes.. and my body literally lost control. I never understood how fasting could be a ‘spiritual’ experience.. but I swear, when you find yourself this rock bottom, left with only you to pull you out… you never question spirituality again.

Tips: Have someone as amazing as Jason by your side to help with pep talks and juice making. If you’re not so lucky, prepare 2 juices at a time and store the second one in air tight container. You get the best benefits drinking immediately after juicing so try not to store for an entire day. Clean and peal your veggies and fruits and store them in a zip lock

Spoiler alert: Middle of Day 3.. and I’m alive again.

  1. This is exactly how I felt the first time I fasted. I only had water for 10 days. I was detoxing, too. I am so proud of you, Chiara, and am so thankful for Jason’s loving support. I am only now learning how enriching it is to have someone in my life in that way.

I’m so happy you’re feeling better. You’re a fighter, and you will only keep feeling better and better. Detoxing isn’t easy and it isn’t fun, but once you’re done, you’ll feel empowered and clear-headed. Today is Day 3 for me, as you know, will edit vids and post them a bit later.

Love you and am sending you healing thoughts and wellness.

    1. Can’t wait to see the videos, Roni and am so proud of you, too, for doing the fast. I had no idea what it was going to be like since this was my first but I am so glad I just dove in.. and without Jason, it would have been so much harder.

Thank you for all of your love and support – it means more to me than you will ever know.

  2. Good for you! I’ve been really interested lately in the idea of detoxing, so this is great to read. I remember do a 40 hr fast for a youth fundraiser several years in a row. Even after that short a time, I came back eating slower and less and had less of a “taste” for junk so I can only imagine what something like this could do. Keep it up! I’m glad you have good support!

    1. Thank you, Becca! It’s a really crazy experience but it’s almost as if the noise has been hushed and I can finally hear what my body has been trying to tell me. Thank you for the support and when you’re ready to dive in, I’m here to help in any way I can !

  3. Chiara, I have NO words. Thank goodness for Jason and baby Luca. I know how hard this has been for you but it’s all for a good reason. I know this is insane given how much pain you are in…but I kind of want to do it. It’s something I’ll have to think about since I don’t have a juicer…but a detox would be good for me. I take WAY too much headache medicine as well.

SO happy that you are feeling more like yourself. Rest, treat yourself nicely, and kick this detox’s ass!

    1. Ugh, Jewels. I love you. I have to say, Watching 200$ go for my bday gift made me cringe a little because the materialistic part of me just thought, “I could have bought boots!” .. BUT looking back only a week and it has been the best gift I could have ever spent money on. It’s something worth investing in as the cheaper ones don’t do leafy greens and don’t extract as much juice.

I had no idea how reliant I had become on pain medication. I’m telling you, Jewels, put some cash aside and plan to do it next month. I’ll be here to help.

  4. Congrats ! You made it past Day 1. You accomplished a lot . You are lucky , that you have a great support system . I am sure you can do it . I was thinking of going on a detox diet . I have been earring unhealthy for years . I am proud of you , keep up the good work ! :)

  5. Chiara, feel SO proud of you. Although not surprised of course, as if Chiara would let a little detox beat her, pffft. So glad you have your support (and assistant juicer), really the best of luck with it. Such a good thing to do for your body, makes one stop and really hear our bodies as you say, forces one to think about what you put into it. Food should really be occastional treats, but most often should be fuel and what our body needs. I struggle with that ratio at times! Who am I kidding, ALL the time :)

  6. Hi!!

Just curious if you we’re able to maintain the weightloss. My reason in asking is because I am quite a clean eater but I’ve been feeling a bit sluggish lately and icky so my friend recommended I do a juice cleanse to remove toxins. I just don’t want to lose five pounds and gain 10 after going back to my regular eating scheduale even though it’s a clean diet.
