A friend of mine has recently gone through this. She was obsessed with staying in shape, eating well and staying toned. After years of enjoying her lean, mean eating machine, she ends up with a new boyfriend with whom she enjoys indulging. She gains the dreaded boyfriend layer.
Fifteen pounds later, she realizes that she’s let herself go. While she was telling me where she fell of the wagon, I realize that with a different perspective Mr. Boyfriend could have helped her stay in better shape than she started out with.
I can relate. Back in my teens, I dated this guy who loved to eat. It was literally his favorite thing to do, and inevitably, it became one of my favorite pastimes as well. I am not naturally toned nor fit, so I, like my friend, gained the extra layer of weight. I’m learning to apply these ways to avoid the boyfriend layer.
Get Him Involved
Allow him to see the sweaty, powerful side of your no-makeup wearing athleticism. I can’t think of too many things better than getting the endorphins going with your man. If there’s a mental hump there getting in the way of making you comfortable with working out with him, talk to him about it so you can work through it together.
If you reach a level of fun competition, you’ll be able to exercise together and help be accountable for each other’s progress.
Indulge with Healthy Food
Instead of celebrating date night with steak and cupcakes, go for salad and dark chocolate covered strawberries. If you eat clean together all week, you should indulge when you spend a special occasion, even if it’s just making time for date night, but don’t go too crazy with it because then eating high-carb and saturated fats becomes a habit.
Try having a super-naughty day once a month, and not a day more. Each bite will also taste better because you won’t take for granted how special it is.
Exercise Trumps Sex
No matter how often you engage in marathon sex, don’t ditch your cardio/HIIT/CrossFit duties. Yes, sex burns calories, but nothing burns through fat like good ol’ fashioned exercise.
If you feel yourself getting bored with the type of exercise you’ve been doing, try something new. Pilates, Zumba, Yoga, Kettlebells are just a few examples of ways to workout you can explore. Flex your muscles and get sweaty!
It’s so easy to fall off the wagon. Plenty of people have fallen off and gotten back on again. No matter how much weight you’ve gained or how many of your jeans don’t fit, it’s possible to reduce your newly gained boyfriend layer. Don’t you want to feel your best, not just for yourself, but for your man as well? Sure ya do! All you’ve gotta do is decide that you’re ready to bring your sexy back. If worse comes to worse, ride a tandem bike together – it’s a joint effort to burn fat and calories.
