CEO, Editor-in-Chief at The Indie Chicks, Inc
Chiara got her start in the blogosphere by dishing out reality slaps on her dating and relationship blog. The brutal honesty that became her signature tone earned her the badass reputation she needed to get The Indie Chicks magazine up and running. She is also a web designer and author of The 9 Mirages of Love. Driven, stubborn, and wildly ambitious, she won’t stop until she is the perfect, self-empowered role model for all of her readers.

There are many things you can do once a day that will change your life – and not all are for the better. You could work out for 2 hours every day and get your dream body, read a chapter every night before bed to teach yourself something new; you could even jot down a completely new life and take every day as a step toward starting fresh.  You could also shoot up heroin every day, eat fast food, kill people or tickle strangers, if you chose to. Like I said, not all for the better. However, there is one thing you absolutely need to add to your list of daily musts to change your life for the better. Lately on The Indie Chicks, we have been redirecting our efforts inward – Keep it in Perspective, Dealing With Expectations, Love Yourself So You Can Upgrade Yourself, etc – and inward is exactly where we’re going to stay for this important piece of advice.

Meet Your New Best Friend

The mirror.

Have you ever gone to a friend or family member for advice and gotten exactly what you were looking for? I mean, have they ever said exactly the right words in exactly the right tone? The answer is likely yes. (And if it’s not, you may need to find some new friends.) But have you ever walked away feeling like something more was missing?

I can’t tell you how often I have stared someone straight in the fact and thought, “I know what you’re saying makes sense and I know it’s exactly what I need to hear but for some reason, I don’t feel any stronger, determined, or better equipped and I definitely don’t feel better about myself – genuinely better – at all.”

Here’s what’s missing: You need to be able to tell yourself those things in order to truly believe them.

Our subconscious isn’t prepared to take someone’s opinion of us completely to heart, because despite how close we may be to some friends or family members, they are not us. At the end of the day, we go to sleep alone, even if we’re laying in bed with someone else.

So the secret to really believing and to really changing your life is to talk to yourself.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the…Wait, I’ll Tell You

Once a day, every day, talk to yourself and change your life.

I’m not talking strict positive affirmations, either. I’m talking about becoming the source of inspiration, motivation and hope that you wake up craving every morning. Ask yourself what you really want in life and make yourself believe you can get it – because you really can.

Think of it psychologically. Who is there to trust if we cannot, first and foremost, trust ourselves? You stand before the mirror and see your image telling you something, adamantly and repeatedly, with conviction. After a while, you’ll have no choice but to interpret it as truth.

It doesn’t matter what you want to change in your life, you can make it happen by believing it first. Perception rules our day to day and it is what sets the happy poor apart from the bitter rich. Perception defines your limits.

Want to lose weight? Tell yourself your body deserves to be healthy and treated right. Want to be happy? Remind yourself of everything you have worth celebrating. Tell yourself how amazing it is to walk out of the house wearing a smile. Smile at yourself and show yourself how great you look wearing one. Want to get promoted? Tell yourself you can do it. Revisit the sleepless nights that got you to where you are today and assure yourself you’ll be able to do it again.

There’s nothing like the power of the sound of your own voice and the reflection of yourself in the mirror. Use that power wisely and change your life.

If you could tell yourself one thing every day to change your life, what would it be?

“You are meant for greatness.” and “Your dreams are valid, attainable, and respectable.”

It took a long time for me to believe either of those; still struggle with it a little actually. For a long time I thought that I was too average for greatness and that being a writer was a “silly” dream.

For a while I kept the motivation taped to my mirror but reading them aloud, making eye contact with myself, that made a huge difference towards believing it. I LOVED this article, Chiara. I love the strength and the confidence you inspire.

This is exactly what I needed to read. You’re right, Love. Self speak is much more important than what others can possibly say to us. On that note, Parents: be careful how you speak to your children because as they grow, that is how they will speak to themselves.
